5. স্টেশনে পদার্পণমাত্র ট্রেন ছাড়িয়া গেল ; পরেরটা আসিতে ঘন্টা দুই দেরী। সময় কাটাইবার পন্থা খুঁজিতেছিলাম, বন্ধু জুটিয়া গেল। একটি মুসলমান যুবক আমার প্রতি কয়েক মুহূর্ত চাহিয়া জিজ্ঞাসা করলি, “শ্রীকান্ত না? “হাঁ” “আমায় চিনতে পারলে না? আমি গহর”। এই বলিয়া সে সবেগে আমার হাত মুলিয়া, সশব্দে পিঠে চাপড় মারিল এবং সজোরে গলা জড়াইয়া ধরিয়া কহিল, “চল আমাদের বাড়ী। কোথায় যাওয়া হচ্ছিল, কলিকাতায় ? আর যেতে হবে না, চল”। সে আমার পাঠশালার বন্ধু। বয়সে বছর চারেকের বড়, চিরকাল আধ-পাগলা গােছের ছেলে—মনে হইল বয়সের সঙ্গে সেটা বাড়িয়াছেবই কমেনাই। তাহার জবরদস্তি পূর্বেও এড়াইবার জো ছিল না। সুতরাং আজ রাত্রেও সে যে আমাকে কিছুতেই ছাড়িবে না, এই কথা মনে করিয়া আমার দুশ্চিন্তার অবধি রহিল না।

The train had steamed off just as I stepped on the platform. The next train was to arrive after two hours. I was trying to find out a way to pass the time when a friend happened to come. A Muslim youth stared at me for some moments and then asked, “You are Srikanta, aren’t you?” “Yes” “Couldn’t you recognise me? I am Gahar”. Saying this, he pressed my hand firmly, slapped me on the back, embraced me by the neck tightly and said, “Let us go to our house. Where are you going, to Calcutta? You need not go there any more. Let us go”. He had been my classmate at the pathsala. He was about four years senior to me in age but had been always a bit eccentric. It seemed to me that his eccentricity had increased, not decreased, with the increase in age. There was no way to escape from his high-handedness even previously. So I was greatly perturbed at the thought that he would not let me go that night under any circumstances.

6. একদিন মহারানী ভিক্টোরিয়া প্রাসাদে বসিয়া রাজকার্য করিতেছেন এমন সময়ে এক কর্মচারী তাহার স্বাক্ষরের জন্য কতকগুলি কাগজপত্র লইয়া আসিলেন। এইগুলির মধ্যে একখানিতে দেখা গেল যে একটি সৈনিকের প্রাণদণ্ডের আদেশ দেওয়া হইয়াছে। মহারানী একটু চুপ করিয়া থাকিয়া জিজ্ঞাসা করিলেন, “এই লােকটির বিরুদ্ধে অভিযােগ কি?”কর্মচারী উত্তর করিলেন—“সে বিনা অনুমতিতে তিনবার তাহার দল ছাড়িয়া পলাইয়াছে।” মহারানীআবার জিজ্ঞাসা করিলেন—“এই লােকটির
মধ্যে কোন ভাল গুণ নাই কি?” কর্মচারী বলিলেন- “হ্যা, মহারানী, সে পূর্বে অনেকবার সাহসের পরিচয় দিয়াছে। এমন কি আহত হইয়াও সে যুদ্ধস্থল হইতে পলায়ন করে নাই”। মহারানী এই কথায় প্রফুল্ল হইলেন এবং লিখিয়া দিলেন– “ক্ষমা করা গেল”।

One day when Queen Victoria was conducting the affairs of the state from the palace, an officer brought some papers for her signature. One of these papers carried an order for the death sentence of a soldier. The Queen kept silent for a while and then asked, “What is the charge against this man?” The official replied, “He has deserted his regiment thrice without permission”. The Queen again asked, “Does not this man possess any good quality?” The official replied, “Yes, Your Majesty. He had shown exemplary courage several times previously. He did not run away from the battle field even though he was wounded.” The Queen was pleased at hearing this and wrote down, “Pardoned”.

7. অণুবীক্ষণ নামে একরকম যন্ত্র আছে, যাহাতে ছােট জিনিসকে বড়াে করিয়া দেখায়। বড়াে জিনিসকে ছােট করিয়া দেখাইবার নিমিত্ত উপায় পদার্থবিদ্যা শাস্ত্রে নির্দিষ্ট থাকিলেও ঐ উদ্দেশ্যে নির্মিত কোন যন্ত্র আমাদের মধ্যে সর্বদা ব্যবহৃত হয় না। কিন্তু বিদ্যাসাগরের জীবনচরিত বড়াে জিনিসকে ছােট দেখাইবার জন্য নির্মিত যন্ত্রস্বরূপ। আমাদের দেশের মধ্যে যাহারা খুব বড়াে বলিয়া আমাদের নিকট পরিচিত, ঐ গ্রন্থ একখানি সম্মুখে ধরিবামাত্র তাহারা সহসা অতিশয় ক্ষুদ্র হইয়া পড়েন। এই চতুম্পার্শ্বস্থ ক্ষুদ্রতার মধ্যস্থলে বিদ্যাসাগরের মূর্তি ধবলগিরির ন্যায় শীর্ষ তুলিয়া দণ্ডায়মান থাকে ; কাহারাে সাধ্য নাই যে সেই উচ্চ চূড়া অতিক্রম বা স্পর্শ করে।

The microscope is an instrument to magnify small objects. Though there may be a technique in physics to show big objects as small, any instrument built for that purpose is not generally used by us. But the life-story of Vidyasagar is like an instrument to show big objects as small. The moment a copy of that book is held up before those who are known to us as the great men of our country, they become suddenly very diminutive figures. The image of Vidyasagar stands like a snow-white peak in the midst of all-round narrowness; nobody can cross or touch that high peak.

8. শিবাজী— গুরুদেব, আপনি ভিক্ষা করছেন ?
রামদাসহ — বৎস, আমি রােজ ভিক্ষা করি।
শিবাজী — কিন্তু কেন—কেন তিনি ভিক্ষা করবেন—রাজা যার পদানত? আপনার এমনকি অভাব থাকতে পারে, যা আমি পূরণ করতে পারি না ?
রামদাস —অভাব আমার কিছুই নাই, বৎস। দিনে আমার একমুষ্টি তণ্ডুল মাত্র প্রয়ােজন।
শিবাজী —কিন্তু সেই এক মুষ্টিই কেন আমার কাছ থেকে নেন না ?
রামদাস —না রাজা, তা আমি পারি না। তাহলে হয়ত তুমি ভাববে তােমার গুরু লােভী। আমি কেন তােমাকে তা ভাববার সুযােগ দিব ?
শিবাজী —ক্ষমা করবেন, গুরুদেব। কিন্তু আপনার কথা শুনে আমি মর্মাহত হলাম। আমি কেমন করে ভুলব—আমি কি ছিলাম, আর আজ কি হয়েছি এবং কে আমাকে তা করেছে। দোহাই আপনার, আপনার যাহা ইচ্ছা চেয়ে নিন ; কিন্তু এই লজ্জার ভিক্ষাবৃত্তি বন্ধ করুন।

Shivaji — Gurudev, you are begging!
Ramdas — Yes, my son, I beg for alms everyday.
Shivaji — But why? Why should he who has the king himself at his beck and call beg for alms ? What are your wants that I cannot satisfy ?
Ramdas — My son, I have no wants. I need only a handful of rice a day.
Shivaji — But why don’t you accept that handful from me ?
Ramdas — No, King, I can’t do that. Then you might think that your spiritual guide is greedy. Why should I give you the scope to think so ?
Shivaji — Excuse me, Gurudev. I am cut up by your remark. How can I forget what I had been and what I have become and who has made me so ? For God’s sake ! Please take from me whatever you want, but give up this disgraceful begging.
